étude noun
\ˈā-ˌtüd, -ˌtyüd\

1 : a piece of music for the practice of a point of technique
2 : a composition built on a technical motive but played for its artistic value

The Étude series is a long-term project that examines ambient narrative while utilizing minimal pre-production, improvisational production, and limited post-production to challenge my collaborators and I to make more daring, instinct-based decisions. The series is intended to hone technical skill and refine artistic intuition.

SUMMER 2019 INSTALLATION - GENERATIONAL AESTHETICS GROUP EXHIBIT | NORWALK, CA

An installation consisting of seven 9” candles—which I hand-poured—placed within a bed of Scottish moss in a dark chamber, onto which Études #1-3 were projected as the lit candles melted over the course of the show.

Étude #1

Étude # 1 was created with dancer/choreographer Keva Walker (she/her) and was filmed on location at Leo Carillo State Park in the burn scars of the Woolsey Fire, which had just swept through Malibu weeks before. The film incorporates the power of wardrobe, using fashion as a symbol and a ritual element, intertwined with dance to honor the land, the loss, and the healing to come, as well as to honor the Tongva people, to whom that land belongs.

Étude #2

A meditation on identity with collaborator Kikuye Sugiyama (she/they) set against the LA skyline.

Étude #3

This Étude combines an intimate exploration of color theory with an examination of sensuality and the body as landscape with collaborators Lizzie Rose (she/her) and Avery St. Germain (she/her).
